TT Assen: P10 the maximum in difficult race
Jonas Folger wasn’t satisfied at all after a hard fought tenth place last Sunday at the TT Circuit in Assen.
After Saturday’s changeable weather which is so typical for the northern part of the Netherlands, the race got underway in fully dry conditions. Due to some sun there were promising signs to race the full distance in the dry conditions but after two thirds of the distance the first rain drops fell and the race was red-flagged with two laps to go because it started to rain. The classification was the ranking after 21 laps.
At this time Jonas Folger crossed the line in tenth position. It was a hard job to achieve this top 10 finish. Folger wasn’t able to push at its limits from the very first beginning as you know it from him. Lack in feeling for the front slowed the 22-year-old German to race his usually super-fast speed at the Assen track.
The FIM Moto2™ World Championship to take now again a three weeks break before Folger and his German Dynavolt Intact GP team returns to action at their home race for the Motorrad Grand Prix Deutschland at the legendary Sachsenring.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, KALEX), 10th (World Championship position 7th, 63 points):
“Obviously a tenth position in Assen doesn’t match my expectations. But in respect to our problems with which we struggle at the moment, I must be pleased to finish in the top 10. The start itself was ok but from the first corner I struggled a lot. I lack safety and confidence to push harder so I was far off to ride my speed and took my position in the pack even though I tried and did my best to move forward through the field. My lap times weren’t thrilling though I was able to gain positions as soon the tyres dropped by some other riders. But a tenth position is by no means sufficient. We know since the first race at least that we’re capable for more and our target is still to race at the front. However, since the Jerez grand prix somehow it’s full of worms. It doesn’t matter if I go out with new or used tyres, I miss the feeling to ride relaxed like it was at the beginning of the season. I think we must change something big for the next race at the Sachsenring. With this action I should get back my bike which I had and with which I was so fast. Since we changed fork and swing arm, the feeling is gone. So for this we’re forced to do this action because otherwise we will not find the reason. It is unacceptable that we were able to fight for victory every time during the early stages of the championship and that we came home in the top 10 with great difficulties now. Anyway, I wasn’t faster with these new parts during our last tests but the feeling was better so for this we decided it to use it during the races.”
