#AmericasGP: Encouraging start in Texas
Eight fastest after Friday’s free practice sessions, Jonas Folger looks forward to go through Q2 this weekend again.
The championship’s round three at the enormous Circuit of The Americas in Austin got underway in good and stable weather conditions with increasing temperatures up to 30 degrees at the time of FP2 in the afternoon after the sun found its way through dark skies in the morning.
The demanding Texan track is no longer a foreign affair for the 23-year-old shooting star from Bavaria. But first, he had to get grips with it aboard his MotoGP™ Yamaha YZF-M1, a bike which delivers more than 250 horsepower. As soon as this exercise was done, Folger showed up in his usual strong performance over the course of the second session in the afternoon.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), FP1: P14 – 2´06.692 (15/15) / FP2: P8 – 2´05.033 (14/15):
“First and foremost, it was all about getting used to this track with the MotoGP bike but at the end of the day, however, I definitely can be satisfied with the achievements. It was interesting to learn this technically challenging circuit with this kind of bike. However, it was not easy to adapt quickly and find a flowing rhythm. There are so many corners here and, although each one has a different character, all hang together somehow. So, if you make a mistake in only one turn, it has a huge negative effect for the entire lap.
“We didn’t change so much to the bike during both sessions today because it was just more to get familiarized with the CoTA in respect to my riding. For this reason, we just used one tyre during this morning’s FP1 and we started with the same tyre into the second session before we put in the softer option. Regarding the front tyre, however, we used the medium compound all time because I wasn’t 100 percent sure that this option would work better. But most of the other riders have shown that I was wrong in my opinion. But so far, we haven’t lost anything and we will try and test this tyre tomorrow. During Saturday’s FP3, first, we will continue working for the race before we will start a time attack in order to qualify directly for Q2. I’m sure that we will continue in this encouraging way anyway.”
