#AragonGP: Rain complicates things on Friday

  • 22.09.2017

During the wet first free practice sessions, Jonas Folger struggled to find confidence with the bike in the tricky track conditions.

Contrary to the hot weather during the previous days, a rain front caused cooler temperatures and some rain showers on day one of action in Aragón. FP1 and FP2 were therefore run under mixed conditions at the impressive MotorLand circuit. On an initially wet session during each session, Jonas Folger and his crew lost a lot of valuable practice time, still looking for a basic setup for those conditions. But the Yamaha rider is not discouraged from the moderate outcome at the start into the weekend in Spain’s outback because he trusts on the weather forecasts. In most possible dry conditions, he wants to perform at his normal level, starting with Saturday morning’s FP3.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), FP1: P13 – 2´03.434 (12/12) / FP2: P18 – 2´01.745 (9/14):

“Mainly the changing weather was responsible for our tedious start into the weekend. Throughout both sessions today, the track conditions have changed. On a wet track, we tried to work on a good rain setup. But in this process, we were running into a circle and in the end, we finished with nothing in our hands. So, we have lost valuable practice time too. At the moment, I miss the feeling in turning, as well as a comparison with the data of Johann (Zarco) shows that he is much more using the rear brake in the wet. This makes it easier to stop the bike and to turn it quicker and at the same time more safe. It makes me wondering, why I cannot find confidence in the wet now, whilst I was usually strong in the rain in the past. But with the Yamaha I do not succeed in this somehow. Nevertheless, we used both today’s sessions in the wet quite well and tried some things.”

“We are also very confident that the situation will normalize again tomorrow because the weather will change again and it should be dry for the remaining weekend and then the conditions should meet me to get to know this track aboard the MotoGP bike better. Therefore, FP3 will be a very important session for us, in which the base for race day is to be found. This means also that all tyre options needs to be tested and with the softer option, a time attack will be done in the later stages because the jump into Q2 is still our goal. We also use a new system for the traction control but this still needs to be more adapted to my riding. It will definitely be a busy FP3, but in the dry we should be able to show our normal level of high performance.”
