Jonas Folger

#ArgentinaGP: “I’m very happy with this sixth place”

  • 09.04.2017

The astoninglishly MotoGP™ rookie came home in a strong sixth position after an almost faultless race in Sunday’s Gran Premio de la República Argentina.

After changeable conditions on Saturday, race day for round two was accompanied by stable weather, though dark skies it remained dry. In addition, temperatures were not as hot as it was a few days ago.

Apart from that good conditions, Jonas Folger had to deal with other problems. Since last night he suffered a stomach upset for which he had to take some medicine. However, the 23-year-old German rider in Monster Yamaha Tech 3 displaced everything as soon he took his starting position in P11 on the grid. This time he showed again one of his usual strong starts as well he rode very agressively during the opening laps. Both of this fact paired with a clever division of his race were the base for Folger’s strong performance throughout the demanding 25 laps at the 4.8 kilometres long Autódromo Termas de Rio Hondo.

The Championship continues with its visit to the Circuit of the Americas for the US round in two weeks.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), 6th (World Championship position 6, 16 points):

“I’m very happy with today’s sixth place. However, before the race I was a bit worried because I’m not 100 percent fit in terms of my health. Since last night I suffered problems with my stomach. But I have been able to displace it well with the last preparations for the race. My start today was much better than last time in Qatar, which was also my intention to improve for this. That’s why I was much stronger during the opening laps. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in lap three, for which I lost some positions. Apart from that, my pace was very strong right from the beginning as well as I could settle in a good rhythm at any time. I think, I was in tenth position or something like that when I saw Danilo (Petrucci) ahead of me, struggling with his bike. But he pushed his package really to the limits.

“In contrast to him, I tried to safe my tyres in order to have more reserves for the final part. From this point of view, I was very confident that I’ll pass him sooner or later. Unfortunately, my team mate Johann (Zarco) was a bit faster today so, I couldn’t catch him till the line. But he rode a very strong race so congratulation to him. Anyway, I think a sixth place in just my second MotoGP race is an impressive result. We can be more than satisfied, especially sind we didn’t expect a result like this. In addition, I learned a lot again today.

“Let’s speak again about the initial stages of the race: during the first laps, I was less cautiously as I was two weeks ago in Qatar. This has helped me to quickly find my rhythm and I didn’t have lost any positions. This also did apply to my confidence. Beyond that, I learned a lot how to manage tyre wear over the distance, as well as I understand all possible mappings better now. This was why I ended up comprehending how I can ride faster again by changing my riding style towards the end of the race and again starting to push. It was in many respects an interesting race. Next, we need to look how we can improve to be faster than Johann next time.”
