Argentina GP: First Podium in 2016
Jonas Folger had a big smile in his face after he celebrated his first podium and the first points this year thanks to a brilliant third place in the South American round.
In difficult conditions Folger rode a strong and clever race Sunday afternoon. Overnight rain showers provided completely different condition than during the previous days. However, till starting time at 2pm the track was almost dried out but there remained many wet patches to be cautious. The 22-year-old Kalex rider proved once again as a rocket man at the start to lead the wild Moto2 pack for two laps at least. But then, Folger was passed first by Sam Lowes and later by Johann Zarco before he raced in P4 for a while. However, as recently as Italian rider Franco Mordibelli crashed out of the race in front of him, this incident opened a gap between Folger and the leading pair with Zarco and Lowes which Folger wasn’t able to close again in the later stages of the race.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Kalex), 3rd (World Championship position 9th, 16 points):
“I’m very happy about this podium today. Not only because I achieved it in my second race only for my new team already. But at the same time the collected points for the championship are important too. We went into this weekend to open our points tally which we have achieved now. I think we can be pleased too with that number of points. The race itself was good which was the same for my start and even more the opening laps. However, to race till the end wasn’t quite easy to manage because of the steadily changing conditions. It was hard to find the limit because there were a lot of damp patches out there. But honestly speaking this track offers a good grip level in the wet and in rainy conditions. Anyway, I tried to follow Sam and Johann after they passed me but their pace was pretty fast. Yes, both were really strong today. It was my plan to stay with them but later Franco crashed in front of me which cost me some time. I think without this incident I would have been able to start an attack in the final lap but foremost I was very eager to bring the points home safely. In any case I’m very pleased how things went this weekend, my crew did an excellent job too and at the end we collect valuable. A big thank you to the entire team.”
