#AustrianGP: Significant progression during qualifying
Jonas Folger narrowly missed the leap into Q2 but after improvements on Saturday afternoon, he looks forward and is fully charged for Sunday’s race in Styria.
The second day of practice saw improved weather conditions for Jonas Folger and his crew as they continued their work with the new chassis which the German Yamaha rider received recently. However, different tests and changes to the settings did not lead to success, which ultimately led Jonas to make the step back to the standard bike and setup. Aboard the Yamaha YZF-M1 equipped with the chassis which provides more stiffness, the MotoGP™ rookie regained his confidence around the hilly 4.3 kilometres long Austrian track. He pushed to make it through Q2 during the final stages but narrowly missed out by just by 0.16 seconds. So, this means Jonas will start Sunday’s race from 13th spot on the grid.
Starting time for round eleven of this year’s campaign is scheduled for Sunday, 2:00 pm.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), Grid position 13th – 1´24.015 (9/9):
“Today, we also started with the new chassis. But this new attempt did not work out again. Therefore, we changed back to the old chassis though, also this did not make any difference at first. I think, it was just a matter of feeling in general which I could not find upto that point. In the end, however, we went back to the old bike with the well-known and tried-and-tested settings. Maybe it was also a bit my cause, because I was not able to give my crew a clear direction on Friday. That gave us a little confusion. In addition, I could not find a proper feeling for the track which was caused mainly by my riding. The team tried to help me with making changes to the bike whilst I tried to go faster too. This was why we have completely lost our direction.”
“For qualifying, we finally used the old bike with the old, stiffer frame. FP4 was crucial for this decision and it is also our plan now to race with it tomorrow. During the last laps in Q1 I felt very comfortable which was the case for the first time this weekend. So, I’m going into race day with a good feeling, because I know that our performance during my time hunt was not at its limit. There is still potential as I can adapt more to the conditions as well as to the track. Even if our starting position is not necessarily the best, it nevertheless can be a good race tomorrow.”
