#AustrianGP: Going faster lap by lap in picturesque Spielberg
Jonas Folger went into his fifth race with the Malaysian PETRONAS Sprinta Racing Team with a clear vision of losing less time during the early stages in Sunday’s race at Austria’s exciting Red Bull Ring.
Summer had taken a short break on race day in the green Styria. After morning rain showers, warm-up session took place in mixed conditions. For Jonas Folger, Sunday began very promisingly at Austria’s fastest playground as fifth fastest during the 20-minutes long session. Until the start of the season’s round eleven shortly after lunch time, the 4.3 kilometres track at the Red Bull Ring, picturesquely embedded in the hilly landscape of the Styrian Murtal, was almost completely dried out again. The 25-year-old German started from P22 on the starting grid and was therefore initially torn into a crowd. But as soon as Folger found his rhythm, and he had a reasonably free ride, he immediately flashed his speed. During the final stage he was even faster than the front runners.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (PETRONAS Sprinta Racing, KALEX), P18:
“As in the past races, my start wasn’t one of my best today. During the first laps it was hard for me to assert myself. Starting from that far down didn’t make things any easier. Unfortunately, gearing jumped into neutral once. That cost extra time, of course. But after these difficult initial stages of the race, I got into a good rhythm. In the end I got faster and faster. The last two laps were very strong in terms of lap time.”
“So, today’s race has shown again that if everything fits, the speed would be there to score points every time at least. I’m very sure of that. But I still have a lot of work to do. First and foremost, I’ve to improve my qualifying performance and, of course, on Sunday I’ll have to do the first laps better as well. But that will take more race experience. Otherwise, I think we can be satisfied with this weekend so far.”
