Jonas Folger

#CatalanGP: Remarkable opening day after long time off racing

  • 14.06.2019

During Friday’s first free practice sessions, Jonas Folger clearly underlined that he hasn’t lost any of his talent.

Regarding the weather it was a varied start into the season’s round seven. Contrary to the forecasts, the sky above the magnificent racetrack not far from Barcelona was cloudy until the early afternoon. Except for a few raindrops it remained dry all day long. Just at the time of the Moto2™ class’ second session, the temperatures climbed up to the expected values. World Championship returnee Jonas Folger went into the free practice sessions without any expectations, as the priority was to get used to the current KALEX Moto2 racing machine of the Malaysian team PETRONAS Sprinta Racing. He managed this change in the twinkling of an eye, whilst still finding it a little bit of difficulties to get the right feeling with the tyres used in the intermediate Grand Prix category.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (PETRONAS Sprinta Racing, KALEX), FP1: P19 – 1´45.701 (16/17) / FP2: P19 – 1´45.588 (15/15):

“I’m happy with the way how things went today. Our goal was to consistently improve ourselves. We managed that really well with every exit we did. The difference to the bikes I’ve been ridden recently is huge, of course. But the difference in the tyres is even bigger. This familiarisation isn’t easy for me at the moment because I’m used to something completely different from MotoGP. Nevertheless, our gap with just eight tenths of a second is certainly not wrong. I’m now deliberately leaving the placement outside the field. That’s not what it’s all about at the moment. But on a long track like this, eight tenths aren’t really much, and we know exactly how to proceed with regard to the settings.”

“We’re too short with the bike. It has to be more stable, especially at the front. In this respect we will change a lot until tomorrow. During today’s practice sessions we mainly worked on the seat position. So, we could hardly concentrate on decent laps, but we also tried to adjust the bike to my needs in the best possible way. At the same time, I tried to adapt my riding style. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome two new partners. Many thanks to Sven Gruber from Horntools and Gerrit Mielke from dreiformstudio for their trust in me. I will do all I can to fulfil their expectations and to ensure that this leads to motivation for a long-term partnership.”
