#CatalanGP: Successful return as a grand prix rider
In his comeback race, Jonas Folger has experienced a lot and apart from the result, he surprised in many ways.
The season’s round seven was accompanied by fine summer weather. The hot temperatures, however, were demanding to human and machines. For Jonas Folger, it was a remarkable return to racing at the highest level in many ways. First of all, the 25-year-old can look back on an impeccable performance this weekend which he topped with an amazing pace during the race as soon as he found his rhythm. Prior to that, he was 13th fastest during this morning’s warm-up session, underlining that he can keep up with the world’s best riders in the highly competitive Moto2™ class.
Until the next race, the championship moves over now from southern Europe to the north of the Netherlands, where the series’ round at the historic TT Circuit in Assen is traditionally scheduled for the last weekend in June.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (PETRONAS Sprinta Racing, KALEX), P19:
“My first race after the long break was a big challenge for me. At the same time, I enjoyed it a lot. However, it was clear to me that after more than one and a half years I wouldn’t be able to return to my usual racing mode immediately. That was also the reason why I lost so much time during the first laps. Furthermore, I once clashed with Marco Bezzecchi and almost crashed. Anyway, after this situation I found myself in last position. After that it took me a long time to overtake Jake Dixon. His speed was clearly slower, but on the brakes, he was always extremely late. His riding style is completely different, that made me lose my mind. As soon I finally passed him, my pace was ok though, during the final phase I was able to improve again and was really fast. With regard to my pace from the second third of the race onward, it could have been enough for points. 19th place doesn’t meet our expectations by a long. But it was my first race since a long time, while the competition has been familiar with this bike since November.”
“In this respect, for me and we as a team simply still miss many kilometres and laps, as well as my personal experience in the current Moto2 class at all. Nevertheless, I’m satisfied with my performance. The weekend as a whole went very well. We have constantly improved, and also the setting got better step by step. That’s why the team is happy with me. I think they are also very happy how everything went. Apart from the race result, we already reached our goal for the race day during warm-up. We found this half of a second, we had set ourselves and in the same context we took the hoped-for step with regard to the set-up. At this level we’ll continue with the test here on Tuesday and then we’ll go to the next race in Assen prepared quite differently. A big thank you to the whole team for their support and help this weekend.”
