#DutchGP: Despite a scary Moment super-fast start in the “Cathedral of Speed”
A nasty highsider in the early minutes of Friday morning’s FP1 didn’t have any serious consequences for Jonas Folger.
At cooler temperatures, and with a slight drizzle in the afternoon, the weather mostly remained dry on Friday in the northern part of the Netherlands. But first free practice started with a broken engine at the bike of Andrea Dovizioso, the winner of the last two races in Mugello and Barcelona. Jonas Folger and Jorge Lorenzo crashed due to oil on track. Whilst Jorge Lorenzo escaped completely unhurt, Folger was lucky. Except for a painful bruising to his hips, he got off mild.
However, the 23-year-old German was hardly intimidated. Once the track was cleared and the session was continued, Folger didn’t let any time pass. It took just a couple of laps till the Yamaha rider was again amongst the front group. Folger finished FP1 eight fastest before he further improved in the afternoon and set second fastest lap time on Friday.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), FP1: P8 – 1´35.052 (14/19) / FP2: P2 – 1´33.497 (15/16):
“I’m very happy. The changes we made in Barcelona two weeks ago proved out very positively also here. This is really very pleasingly. But the crash this morning was quite heavy. I lost the rear on Dovi’s oil and the highsider was really nasty. But then, I got under the bike in the gravel. Luckily, I got away with just a few bruises. After the crash, however, I was a little worried as I was afraid to lose confidence.”
“Therefore, it was important to get out of box and even though it took some laps, I quickly got back into my rhythm. I still have pain, but these doesn’t bother me riding the bike. Some turn before the crash I felt some strange movement with the tyres but I didn’t care about it because I thought it was related to the conditions. But suddenly I lost control of the rear wheel completely. Fortunately, we were able to continue the session and we even set a fast lap time.”
“Until the last exit in the afternoon, we used the medium compound tyres. This option works better for me, especially the front tyre. But for the last run, when I set my fastest lap time, we put in the softer option both for the front and the rear. But I had some problems with this because there were too much movements in corner entry. If it is dry on Saturday, we surely will go out for a time attack with the medium front and the soft rear tyre.”
