#GermanGP: Confident start into the big weekend at the home race
Jonas Folger got positively surprised by the recently resurfaced track the legendary Sachsenring.
Like one week ago in the Netherlands, changeable weather also affected the opening day at this weekend’s Motorrad GP Deutschland. After a dry first session this morning, a brief but heavy downpour provided wet conditions in the afternoon. For teams and riders, however, these different conditions were welcomed in order to get familiarized with the new tarmac under all possible circumstances.
Jonas Folger was definitely impressed with the work done by the track’s operators. On a dry track, the 23-year-old German rider recorded eleventh fastest lap time whilst the Yamaha rider and his crew completed some test tasks for MotoGP™ tyre supplier Michelin towards the end of this morning’s FP1 because the French manufacturer brought a new type of the harder option for this weekend. In a rainy second session in the afternoon, it took a couple of laps for Folger to get grips with the excellent grip level on a wet track. But once in a flash, he confirmed once again his outstanding feeling for such tricky conditions with eight fastest lap time.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), FP1: P11 – 1´22.175 (24/28) / FP2: P8 – 1´28.988 (26/26):
“I’m very satisfied with the achievements of the first day here at the Sachsenring. In addition, it’s also to say that the operators did a great job with the new tarmac. The grip level is good in both, in the dry and also in the wet, as well as the surface is that flat in breaking areas without any bumps or something else. In contrast to the past years, the track’s conditions have improved significantly. Under rainy conditions, the grip level is incredible – I think, I’ve never raced with as much as grip like here now. In the morning, however, we suffered just a small issue regarding the tyre pressure at the front which was why I could not improve our lap time in the end.”
“In the afternoon, during the rain hit FP2, I was even amazed how much grip this new surface offers. Therefore, I was pretty slow at the beginning, and I think, I went into this session with the same feeling as in Assen, where the grip level was that much bad last weekend. So, it took a while to find the confidence or otherwise said, until I could use this grip in the rain better. Towards the end, we changed the bike’s setup a bit and tried to improve the feeling with the front. It is still not perfect, but we were pretty fast with these changes. Overall, we have done a solid job today and I look forward to tomorrow.”
