GP Ceske republiky: First victory of the season
In extremely difficult conditions Jonas Folger was racing in his own league during Sunday’s Brno race and won his first Grand Prix this year in superior way.
A change of weather conditions brought heavy rain showers to the South of the Czech Republic this morning. So the warm up was the first session on a soaking wet track. Folger apparently managed the switch the best of all. The quickest lap time after the last preparation for the race was a clear hint on his intentions. The 23-year-old took over the top with a breathtaking move in the first corner of the first lap. Folger’s single persistent follower was the Spaniard Alex Rins. But he absolutely had no idea to match the strong lap times, which Folger put in despite of partly unfavourable conditions. Thanks to his win today he was able to climb up to fourth position in the overall standings. While Folger was happy with his first win of this season – his fifth in general – the atmosphere inside the team was even more effusive. Dynavolt Intact GP was celebrating the first big triumph in history of the ambitious team, based in the German Allgäu.
After a hectic start into the second part of the season with two races in a row, the Moto2 world championship is heading into a two week’s break now before the fight for points is going to continue in September 4th with the British Grand Prix.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, KALEX), Winner (World Championship position 4th, 108 points):
“I’m super happy! Finally, the first win this year came, I’m overly happy and want to thank my team and all our sponsors for the great support. To win this race was no easy task. Especially because of the difficult conditions this race was very long. From the beginning to the end I tried to not make any mistake. But this wasn’t easy at all. Despite of the partly hard rain our lap times were very fast. I felt Alex (Rins) in my neck for quite a long time. Until the middle of the race he made a lot of pressure. But in the end I took a big risk again to get away from him and to have an advantage of four, five seconds. Again thank you to the team because after the warm up until the race we were able to improve with our rain setting. Even this win came in rainy conditions it backs us for the next race. Apart from this it’s a fantastic feeling to be able to climb up to fourth position in the points standings. Already this morning during the warm up I was able to build a good feeling in this conditions. The best time was everything else than a chaotic lap, but I was riding even relaxed. In any case my pace was very strong, the feeling with the bike was ideal and so I went into the race with the unconditional will to win. During the race itself I had everything under control more or less from the start. Of course I had some tricky moments, but this is just normal in the rain. Today everything was working well. For the next races we have to work hard anyway to be finally able to win in the dry. I’m already looking forward to Silverstone, where we hopefully can continue like this.”
