GP Deutschland: “I thought he now belongs to me”
Jonas Folger displayed cleverness and also his fighting spirit in extremly difficult conditions during Sunday’s rain soaked Moto2 race at the Sachsenring. In doing so and als due to his consistent performance throughout the weekend he managed it to overcome the curse for this circuit.
The weather couldn’t have been more changeable this weekend. After again and again drizzle rain on Friday, the second day of practice was accompanied by bright skies with significantly warmer temperatures. But for race day the weather changed again with dark cloud darkened the sky above the Sachsenring region and it didn’t take long to start raining.
Already early in the morning the first drops fell before it became strong rain eventually. For the 20 minutes long warm up session the track was fully wet so this was the first session in wet conditions this weekend. Jonas Folger and his crew in Dynavolt Intact GP were able to get familiarized quickly to this tricky conditions and after he set the third fastest lap time Folger underlined that it is to count with him today. Except the strength of the rain the weather remained stable till the early after afternoon hours which signified that the Moto2 race was held under rainy conditions. Folger left the line from 13th spot on the grid in a great way so thanks to this he was able to race with the front group from the very first beginning. However, later on he slowed his pace to save some reserves for the final stage. The last meters before the chequered flag proved as a true thriller as Folger tried to snatch victory from reigning champion Johann Zarco in the final corner. With today’s second place Folger already celebrated his third rostrum finish this year.
The Moto2 World Championship now heads into the deserved summer break now. But before the first race of the second half of the season mid of August, Folger and his team will attend a two-day testing at the Red Bull Ring in Austria’s Styria. Round 10 with the Motorrad Grand Prix von Österreich is a new entry to the series calendar.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, KALEX), 2nd (World Championship position 6th, 83 points):
“I’m so happy. To finish my home race at the Sachsenring on the podium is an indescribably wonderful feeling, even it wasn’t enough to win it. Anyway, I’m happy about everything because it was such a great day at all. Already during warm up I was able to adapt well to the changed conditions in comparison to yesterday. My pace was strong from the very first moment. So for this I knew that I’m capable of performing strong during the race. For the race itself I left the line superbly and I was able gain many positions to found myself within the leading group after some corners. But at halfway point of the race I couldn’t go the pace of the front guys though I was pushing hard at every time. I had some big moments and I also saw many riders crashing which has remembered me to be cautious because I wouldn’t like to do the same. For this reason, I slowed my pace and in doing so I saved some reserves in order to be able to attack during the last laps. In the end I was able to turn up my rhythm and as soon I saw Johann (Zarco) in front of me with some laps to go, I closed the gap rapidly. In the final lap I was close to him. At this time, I thought he now belongs to me. In the last corner before the line I had to try it because I wanted not to miss this opportunity. Finally, I passed him on the breaks and I tried to keep line tight as well to keep it in corner exit. As soon I was able to open the throttle I I thought I could win this race. But Johann managed it to accelerate in a better way and passed me on the line. Somehow it’s a pity because I was so close to win my home grand prix but on the other hand it feels so great to achieve a real strong result after a while again. Even more as it is in front of my home fans who are so enthusiastic. Beyond that, I think I was able to overcome the Sachsenring cruse this weekend which is very important for me.”
