GP Japan: Third row start not an obstacle

  • 15.10.2016

Jonas Folger started out well into Saturday’s qualifying, but wasn’t able to improve during the final stages in comparison to his rivals. Anyway, the 23-year-old remains confident for the race.

The starting grid for this weekend’s round 15 at the challenging Twin Ring Motegi was decided under perfect conditions. In glorious weather, Folger was able to improve on his Friday’s best marker to finish FP3 as fifth fastest. With the target to claim a starting position in this range, the ambitious German rider headed into qualifying very determined. However, during his final time attack he was able to storm into the top five first but some other riders bettered their lap times to edge him out as Folger wasn’t able to find a consistent rhythm throughout one lap till the end.

Starting time for the Moto2 race is as usual at 12.20am local time. Because of a seven hours’ time difference to Japan this means for the TV viewers in Central Europe to set the wakeup call very early in the morning.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Kalex), Grid position 9th – 1´50.743 (14/18):

“In general, things went a lot better today. Fifth fastest lap time during FP3 was a good start into the day. Overall I felt better with the bike and the track. Qualifying in the afternoon started out very promising. But whilst other riders were able to improve their time a lot towards the end of session, I struggled to get every sector right and to set a fast lap time. Many time I was nearly there, but during this one lap it just didn’t work out to find two, three tenth more. So the session wasn’t an easy one. In the end, P9 on the grid is not a bad starting position. I don’t worry too much for the race for not being able to get more towards the front. My rhythm and pace gives me a good feeling. But I still must work on the first sector out there. I don’t see any obstacle starting from ninth spot on the grid.”
