GP Japan: Not a bad start to the weekend

  • 14.10.2016

Regarding the circumstances of the long haul trip to Japan, Jonas Folger was more or less pleased with his start into the weekend at the challenging Twin Ring Motegi.

Japan’s sunny autumn weather provided nearly perfect conditions on Friday. The 23-year-old German rider got a solid start into this year’s round 15. After Folger posted 13th fastest lap time during Friday morning’s FP1, he was able to improve with the softer tyre option Dunlop has brought for this weekend towards the end of the second session in the afternoon. In doing so, Folger was able to jump into the top 10 in the combined practice times though the bike’s handling doesn’t still match the requirements of the 4.8 kilometres’ Japanese circuit.

Moto2 schedule for Saturday contains another free practice session before the starting grid is set to decide with qualifying in the afternoon. The timed session starts at 3:05pm local time (8:05am CET).

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Kalex), FP1: P13 – 1´52.283 (17/17) / FP2: P10 – 1´51.391 (14/17):

“My start into the weekend wasn’t an easy task for me. It took a while to get a decent pace but just when we put in the softer tyre at the end of FP2, the situation improved significantly. But I still miss the feeling with the bike to keep better lines. For the moment I’m not able to stop the bike properly, which is also the reason for some other problems at corner entry. In general, I’m not able to open the throttle early on. But I’ve to admit that we didn’t spend so many laps with the type zero tyre, the softer one. After FP2 we’re just 0.7 seconds off the pace but there is still a lot of room for improvements. I’m sure we’ll do a lot better tomorrow. Apart from that, I didn’t feel very well today. This of course is no excuse, but I wasn’t at the absolute limit during both sessions. P10 in Friday’s combined standings is not really what we wanted but it’s not a too bad start here in Motegi.”
