GP of Japan: Great Podium Comeback
Jonas Folger rounded up his consistent strong performance by a strong second place in difficult conditions this Sunday at Motegi’s Twin Ring.
Due to changed weather conditions after overnight rain, time schedule was to set new for race day at Japanese round. First teams and riders must wait a long time before the warm up session got underway, before race start were re-scheduled for 1:00pm local time with a shortened distance to 15 laps.
Folger already underlined during the morning’s warm up session that he felt well in rainy conditions as he was recorded with the third fastest lap time. The Kalex rider and his crew did their job well in order to be well prepared for all possible conditions for the race, not only thanks to his front row start as second fastest he achieved the previous day. However, the base for the second place in the race was an excellent start after that Folger took the leading spot for a while. But, he then was passed by race winner and new Moto2™ World Champion Johann Zarco. Thanks to today’s 20 points for second place, Folger gained one position in the World standings to occupy fifth place.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (AGR Team, Kalex) – 2th, World Championship position 5 (145 points):
“First congratulations to Johann for his World title. I think he earned it well particularly after his super strong season. But now I would like to express my joy about my today’s comeback on the podium. Due to the long waiting, it was a difficult race day at all but also due to the difficult conditions. However, I felt well for it immediately during warm up which was also the case with the bike. So for this I was very confident for the race but honestly speaking these were my conditions with a rainy wet track and light rain. In any case, I did an excellent start into the race and thanks to it I was able to take the lead for a while. It was such a superb feeling to head a race again after such a long time, so I enjoyed riding a lot. Nevertheless, Johann caught me after a couple of laps and I knew that he had a higher pace so he passed me. Of course, I tried to stay with him but I was riding over the limit so I focussed to bring home second place home safely. Finally these are important and valuable points for the championship as well it so great to be on the podium again. A huge thanks to my team for their outstanding job during the entire weekend. However, most important we get more consistent every time and make progress at each race weekend. After this great weekend here in Japan I already look forward to the next race in one week.”
