#IDMSuperbike: Perfect start into Superbike adventure with pole position at Assen
On his debut in IDM Superbike class, Jonas Folger dominates the competition as much as he likes.
Jonas Folger proved out immediately that he will be the man to beat in the top-class of the International German Motorcycle Championship this season. The 27-year-old Yamaha rider from Mühldorf in Upper Bavaria did not let taken away any session’s best time during both days of practice at Assen’s world famous TT Grand Prix Circuit. Therefore, Folger put himself in the role as logical favourite for pole position for Saturday’s qualifying practice sessions, which he then promptly secured.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Bonovo action powerd by MGM Racing, Yamaha YZF R1), Pole-Position – 1´37.353:
“So far the weekend here in Assen is going very well. I liked it from the beginning and I really enjoyed riding in this class. The competition is also at a remarkably high level. This is particularly important for me regarding my further goals because I am pretty much challenged. Not only Ilya Mickhalchik is a serious rival. But he really bites, he is bursting with ambition. In addition, he was able to set an extraordinarily strong lap time in the second qualifying session so, he was close to snatch the top spot on the starting grid. At this point I have to say that my last lap in QP2 was not counted because I crossed the line three thousandths of a second too late. That was brutally close and it’s a real pity because otherwise I would have taken pole with a 1’36.9. That would have been by far the fastest lap so far this weekend. Nevertheless, I am happy about pole position. I think that is a successful debut so far, which is something to be proud of. But now I am really looking forward to the first real race day this year. I am already excited to see how fast the pace during the races will be.”
“On Friday morning we started with a good base. So, our test here in Assen has paid off completely. We did not have to change much at all, at least as far as the suspension set-up was concerned. Of course, we had to adjust the electronics, with which we also worked a lot last weekend at Magny-Cours and made good progress. Anyway, the current settings proved to be correct, as we were much faster on the last two days than we were at our test here. So, I can hardly wait for my debut races in this championship. But it will definitely be a big challenge, as I have never done two races on one day before. But I am already looking forward to the two times 15 laps on Sunday. It will be a hot fight, as Mikhalchik will certainly give everything and try to be able to compete. But after these strong practice performances there is no other goal than to win both races. I’m convinced that this plan is absolutely feasible, especially as we’re well prepared.”
