#IDMSuperbike: Jonas Folger celebrates perfect IDM debut with two dominant race wins

  • 17.08.2020

The 27-year-old Yamaha rider always had the competition firmly under control during his comeback race in the International German Motorcycle Championship at Assen last weekend.

Jonas Folger has returned at an impressive level of high performance. At the Dutch Grand Prix circuit at Assen he was immediately the man to beat. After superior pole position, conquered on Saturday, the rider from Upper Bavaria started into Sunday’s races in the role as logical favourite for the highest step on the podium. Meanwhile, the start of race one was delayed due to problems with the starting lights. The distance was then reduced to 13 laps. Despite a small mistake in the first corner, Folger led the field from the start to the finish line. In race two, however, he had to start from ninth spot on the starting grid. The reason for this was the recently introduced “reversed grid” rule. However, Folger was quickly back at the front and did not give up the lead until the finish. The Superbike newcomer secured a superior double victory at the series’ late season opener.

The second event of IDM Superbike 2020 will take place on September 7/8 at the tight and twisty Sachsenring.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Bonovo action powerd by MGM Racing, Yamaha YZF R1), Winner / Winner:

“I would say the first race weekend in the IDM Superbike was a complete success for all of us. Besides, my comeback as a permanent entry in a championship after a long time could not have gone better. Everything was exactly right from the beginning. It did not take us long to get along with the track in Assen. A previous test was a help, of course. After perfect practice and qualifying sessions with the highlight to secure pole position, expectations for Sunday’s races were particularly high. Anything less than being at the top of the podium twice would have been a little of disappointment. But both race wins did not come that easy for me. There are several extraordinarily strong opponents, I was really surprised by the level of some of them. Anyway, it is good that the competition is generally at a remarkably high level, I am happy about that fact. Race one went as planned except for a few turbulences before the start.”

“In the second heat I had much more fun after I had to leave the line from ninth spot in row three. But it did not take long until I had overtaken everyone in front of me. In any case, I was always able to control everything well when leading the pack. Nevertheless, it was a challenge for me. But now I am super happy about winning both races, Assen was a successful debut in this series from A to Z. Next up is the Sachsenring, where of course the best memories will come back. The Sachsenring has been one of my favourite circuits since the biggest success of my career so far. Therefore, we are already looking forward to round two and hope that we can repeat this strong performance there and continue like this. But first of all, my thanks to the whole team for their great work last weekend.”
