#IDMSuperbike: Sachsenring opening round of a fully packed September

  • 06.09.2020

For Jonas Folger, the second stop of the championship is an incredibly special place. The 27-year-old rider from Upper Bavaria is returning to the scene of his greatest success to date.

Although the IDM Superbike 2020 is only going into its second round this Monday and Tuesday, it is practically turning on to its home straight. Due to the current situation this year, the racing calendar had to be drastically reduced from nine planned events to four. The champion will therefore be crowned in the next three weeks. Regardless of this fact, Jonas Folger is looking forward to the task ahead with great anticipation. The memories of the MotoGP™ race at the Sachsenring back in 2017 are omnipresent. After Folger initially leading the competition, he only had to admit defeated by the later champion Marc Marquez. This time he wants to continue where they left off three weeks ago at Assen, when Folger started the championship with a double victory, together with his new MGM Racing Yamaha team of Michael Galinski and Jürgen Röder.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Bonovo action powerd by MGM Racing, Yamaha YZF R1):

“Although the circumstances are very strange this year, I am really looking forward to my comeback at the Sachsenring. As well known, I did my best race of my career there. But I did not always feel comfortable at the Sachsenring. Only since the penultimate time, which was in 2016 in Moto2, have I been one unit with this track. But in the meantime, a little more than three years have passed since I was last there. So, I am already curious how it will be to race with the Yamaha Superbike there though, aboard the Yamaha R1 the Sachsenring is new territory for me. But I do not think that I can expect too much of a challenge in this respect, because I can take a lot of experience from my time in Grand Prix racing. Apart from that, I am also curious to see how Ilya Mikhalchik will develop, whether he can become dangerous for me. We must not underestimate him in any case.”

“After our great start into IDM, the entire team heads highly motivated into the next IDM event. We are really looking forward to the coming weeks. However, September could not be more crowded from our point of view but I am happy to be able to enjoy real racing again every weekend finally because from Sachsenring we will move to Lausitzring straight away and a week later we will be guests at the Superbike World Championship round in Barcelona. From there we will be heading straight to the season’s finale at the Hockenheimring. So, there is plenty of action scheduled for the next four weeks. It will demand full concentration from every one of us and with regard to the championship we can’t afford any mistakes. But before that we have to do our jobs properly at the Sachsenring, before we can think further. The weather situation also looks very stable for the next few days. Therefore, we should be able to make the best use of every minute of practice in order to prepare for race day, which this time is exceptionally on Tuesday.”
