#ItalianGP: #JF94 starts with an outstanding performance in Mugello
Completing day one third fastest, the 23-year-old rising MotoGP™ star set a stunning start into the season’s classic race in the heart of Italy’s Tuscany.
Gorgeous summer weather combined with the marvellous circuit at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello offered best conditions to open round six of this year’s World Championship. After signing the contract for his second season in MotoGP™ next year, Jonas Folger, obviously, appeared relieved which was also to see when riding his Yamaha YZR-M1 around the fast and flowing track in a relaxed and easy way. However, it took some laps for him to get adapted to this ultra-fast top speed which the riders achieve along the main straight in Mugello.
But already in his second exit, Folger was able to ride the speed like the premier class´ bests. He finished this morning’s FP1 with just one half of a second off the pace eight fastest whilst the astonishing rookie turned up his pace in the afternoon under much hotter conditions to set third fastest lap time on Friday. At the same time, Folger and his crew decided not to use the more powerful engine which is first planned for qualifying and the race on Sunday.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), FP1: P8 – 1´47.974 (6/16) / FP2: P3 – 1´47.543 (14/16):
“Things went surprisingly well today. Honestly, we didn’t expect to finish Friday in third position. But I had a good feeling with the bike and the track immediately. So, this was decisive for sure. We didn’t have to work a lot on settings, because everything fits well from the start actually. This way why decent lap times came quickly. My fastest lap time, however, I set with the softer rear in the afternoon. The difference between the medium compound and the softer option is huge. Beyond that, we saw that Johann (Zarco) did a really long run with the softer rear so this is what we have to investigate tomorrow in order to find out if this option is a possible choice for the race.”
“Apart from all these things, I’m thrilled about the new front tyre. I have such a good feeling with it because it provides more stability and, of course, more safety. I think, it was definitely the right decision to bring this tyre or that most of the riders voted for this.”
“By the way, FP1 this morning began with a scary moment as I was caught on the wrong foot by the extremely high speed at the end of the main straight. Just on top of the small hill in front of braking zone for turn one, I was closing the throttle and slightly touched the brake. At that moment, the front almost folded. This was not really funny because at this place there are no run-off zones. After that, of course, it took two or three laps to race with fullgas over this hill. But I quickly got it fixed.”
