Jonas Folger: “We know what went wrong”
The 22-year old German endured a disappointing qualifying on Saturday; because of an unusual behaviour of his tyre he wasn’t able to improve on a 18th grid position.
Apart from a lot warmer temperatures during the qualifying practice the conditions were similar to the previous day. But Folger and his crew were caught by surprise by the performance of the tyres. The Kalex rider wasn’t able to do his fast lap full speed.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (AGR Team, Kalex), Grid position 18th – 1´36.360 (17/17):
“This qualifying was useless; it’s a huge disappointment. Already all weekend we had problems with rear grip. But this afternoon it got even worse. We know from other riders and teams that they struggled with the same issues, but in our case we were simply not able to find grip and I wasn’t able to build a feeling for the conditions. I don’t think the warmer temperatures were the reason for this, but I believe we were just not able to fully use the new tyres. Our original strategy was to stop three times and just to race with one set of tyres. But we opted for a tyre change, which would have been the best option anyway. Unfortunately, I always had problems with the fresh tyre on the track and had to take out some speed, which was the reason for the tyre to cool down. It was no problem to heat the tyre up again, but as soon as I found a fast rider to follow and wanted to start again, the behaviour of the tyre was completely different. As soon as this kind of tyre is losing the optimum temperature, the behaviour is completely different afterwards. This was also confirmed by my teammate Axel (Pons). Anyway, I pushed until the end, but the lap times didn’t want to come. My qualifying time was the worst of the whole weekend. Even on Friday morning we were a lot faster. Luckily, we know what went wrong today and that’s why I hope for different conditions for tomorrow, because I want to do a decent result in my last race for the AGR team. I want to say goodbye in a good way, with which I also refer to the season.”
