Malaysia GP: Great third place in the most demanding race of the year
Jonas Folger took a podium finish in last Sunday’s sweltering Sepang race that he already failed one week ago in Australia.
Weather conditions at time of the penultimate Moto2 race this season couldn’t have been hotter. After the cloud of smog above Kuala Lumpur’s metropolitan area lifted slightly and the sun come out for the first time this weekend, temperatures rose dramatically. Regardless of all circumstances, the 22-year-old Folger displayed an impressive performance again. A start like a rocket was the base for his fourth podiums finish this season before the Kalex rider took third place from Spaniard Alex Rins who crashed out of the race.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (AGR Team, Kalex) – 3rd, World Championship position 6th (161 points):
“I’m very, very happy about this third place. After our bad luck last time out at Phillip Island it tastes even more sweet. A rostrum finish is definitely our target every time though, I’ve to admit, that I’m very pleased about our consistent strong weekend again. Even more that this performance came in the probably most demanding race of the year at all. I was already exhausted before the race got underway. No, but I’m really glad to finish this race in such a great way with my fourth podium this season. The outcome as well the duration of this weekend is very important for my team and me. Incidentally, I left the line well though, Alex was able to catch me soon after and passed me and he had a better pace than me. After Tom (Lüthi) and Johann (Zarco) are already escaped at this time, I just set my focus on following Alex. However, I didn’t expect his crash shortly after which happened a bit surprisingly for me and from that point the race became more demanding as it was hard to stay focussed and keep my pace because I had no references ahead of me. Beyond that it was more hot today than over the course of the past days. But that was not all for me, because I also had to be careful that Taka (Nakagami) and the others will not reduce their gap behind me. Finally, I managed it well to bring it home in third place. I lost one position in the overall standings but in the best case it’s possible to conclude this championship in fourth overall. Ok, this is purely speculative, but I hope that we are able to finish this season with another podium in Valencia in two weeks‘ time.”
