Phillip Island Test: Seventh fastest on day two in Down Under
Jonas Folger reached a surprisingly improvement during the second day at the MotoGP™ test in Australia.
Day two got underway in cloudy but dry weather with a 15-minute-long practice starts session along the main straight at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. It was a welcome opportunity for teams and riders to warm up for the second session in relatively cool temperatures. Folger evaluated this exercise as so-so before he again had certain start-up difficulties to find his rhythm for the superfast and flowing track at the marvellous island.
However, this hurdle was quickly overcome. Since then, the Yamaha rider impressed again with his pure speed and also by lapping very consistently around the 4.4 kilometres long circuit. In addition, he and his crew in Monster Yamaha Tech 3 managed to solve the issues of the previous day. Like during the opening day of this year’s second pre-season test, he set his fastest lap times just before lunch time. Arising winds in the afternoon was occasionally a reason too why he wasn’t able to improve his lap time until the end of track time at 5:45 pm. Folger finished the day two at Phillip Island seventh fastest.
The Australian test comes to an end on Friday with the third and final day.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), P7 – 1´29.664 (29/65):
“I’m very happy with what has been achieved today, especially because it was again difficult to get into a fast rhythm right from the start. At this track, there are many corners that are the right tests of courage so it wasn’t easy to make the next bigger step immediately at these places. But as soon I had the necessary confidence, we were able to achieve a huge improvement in terms of our pace.
“Yesterday’s problem with the too soft setting was fixed from the outset although it took a while to adapt to the harder setup again. This was also a small part of our initial difficulties this morning. Another thing was to test and judge different front tyres which Michelin has brought for this test. On this occasion, we also managed to get the harder front tyre to work for us because yesterday I was the sole rider which didn’t felt comfortable with whereas all others did their fastest lap times with this option. So, for this we spent a lot of time with this task and in the end I did my personal best with this tyre. Finally, we did a big and important step towards to our competitors in this regard. We are now able to take advantage from this option in conditions like this. This was enormously important.
“Beyond that, we tried a new seat with a different seat position. With this task, we were busy almost the all afternoon. But in the end, we went back to our usual position and after that I could ride a lot faster again. Nevertheless, it was a very helpful action because I learnt a lot and many things are more understandable for me now, as well some things could be sorted out. So, for tomorrow’s final day, we just need to focus on a few smaller things.
“Frankly, I’m a bit surprised how quickly I got on speed during these two days, in particular yesterday. And, I didn’t expect to set a 1´29.6 today. I’m very happy about that, of course, though the target for today actually was to make steady progress in the same way we did yesterday. The fact, that all these things came so pleasing, of course, gives an extraordinary boost. My lap time was really strong but we’re also very happy with our pace with used tyres. For the moment, we’re completely satisfied. If tomorrow’s conditions are like today, then I’m sure that we’ll improve further – mainly, of course, in terms of lap times. As we did in Sepang last time, here again, a race simulation is scheduled for the final day as well as further tyre test for Michelin. But in contrast to today, we’ll get new rear tyres tomorrow.”
