#QATARTEST: Stunning P3 after Day Two

  • 12.03.2017

Jonas Folger was once again the man on everyone’s lips after he provided even more amazement during Saturday’s session at the Qatar test.

First, however, the start of day two at the Losail International Circuit was a bit delayed because of light drizzle. But as soon the conditions returned to normal ways at the track close to the Persian Gulf, Folger and his crew in the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 outfit tackled their scheduled agenda for this evening’s session two.

During the penultimate test day, before the championship is underway with the first race in two weeks, it was again at Folger to optimize the attitude of the bike in relation to the upcoming races. But then the 23-year-old German recorded the third fastest lap of the second night in Losail though this was achieved with the softer connection of the rear wheel, but his lap times in general were also always good enough to found himself amongst the top ten on the time screen.

The final season preparations before the 2017 MotoGP™ World Championship kicks off with the meanwhile traditional and spectacular night race at the Losail International Circuit will be concluded with the third and final session on Sunday. Practice time again is scheduled from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm CET (4:00 pm until 11:00 pm local time).

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), P3 – 1´54.917 (28/41):

“Of course, it was again a good day for us because of the strong position in P3. But apart from that, we worked so hard and did a great job again. Today we were focussed on testing different tyre options as well trying different settings for the setup. The latter was necessary to get a confirmation and these finally led to improvements with the bike.

“But there is still more room for further improvements such as in braking. In order to achieve a better deceleration of the bike, we just need more contact on the rear because I’m often hard on the limits under braking and sometimes I lose the front. However, fortunately I’m able to react well in these situations so that it doesn’t end with a crash. In this area, we definitely must improve and to increase our pace at the same time. I think, we certainly will work on this intensively tomorrow.

“Today, effectively we put more emphasis on our race pace again instead of looking for a fast lap time. However, also this part we managed well today. However, it should be pointed out that we went out for a fast lap with the soft rear. To us a new soft has brought up to one second for sure. Even if it wasn’t our primary goal this evening, it is always good for self-confidence if you’re able to do so. Towards the end of the session we did another race simulation with 12 laps. The idea was to increase my confidence with the bike with a full tank. After the crash at Phillip Island last time this was a very important aspect.

“This long run also went equally pleasing likewise the entire evening because it seems that we’re making progress every time. I was able to ride fast and consistent lap times. So, for this we can be pleased with what has been achieved during this test so far. I would like to thank the team for their efforts. Every one of them is doing a great job and I really enjoy riding the Yamaha and happy to be part of this team.”
