#SanMarinoGP: “The lump is cracked again”
After difficult free practice sessions, the German MotoGP™ star performed in great style on Saturday afternoon but unfortunately, he was denied jumping into the second qualifying heat.
In glorious summer weather on day two of practice, the atmosphere at the Misano GP is gradually starting to heat up, although local hero and superstar Valentino Rossi will be missed. Apart from that fact, just two weeks after his terrible crash in Silverstone, Jonas Folger is on the best way to return to his usual high level of performance with every successive lap done at the 4.1 kilometres long Italian track. In doing so, he played an important role during the first qualifying session this afternoon.
In the very last stages of Q1, the Yamaha rider was even the fastest man on track but on his very last lap, which would have still been the fastest lap time of the session, it was cancelled due to exceeding the track limit.
Starting time for the San Marino GP is scheduled as usual for Sunday 2:00 pm.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), Grid Position 16 – 1´33.987 (7/8):
“Of course, it’s a great pity that I lost the leap into Q2 because of this tiny carelessness on my part. I was so focused that I did not even notice it. In addition, this does not make any sense to me, since I did not run off the track in the corner exit as I was actually riding on the straight already where the curbs are extended there. But these are the rules and I should have just take better care of this. Even so, the fact that the I could not better exploit our strong performance this afternoon hurts.”
“However, the positive aspects prevail. On the one hand, because I was able to ride this lap time, and even more so for several laps. So, in my opinion I did not take benefit from this situation at all, but my last lap has been cancelled. Apart from all these kinds of things, I was much more relaxed today where there was still a certain block in my riding yesterday. After this difficult free practice sessions, I think that the lump is cracked again. Beyond that we were able to largely solve as well our problems that we had yesterday as I succeeded in my familiarisation with the changed position of the brake lever more and more.”
“In the end, it just took me a while to get adapted to this and then I was able to ride at full throttle without thinking about the braking issues and to start riding instinctively again. This was the good situation for me for the first time this afternoon. By the way, I set my fastest lap time with the soft front and medium rear tyres. This combination was the better working option for me and therefore it is a possible choice for the race too. But tomorrow’s chances for a dry race are only Fifty-Fifty. For a possible wet race, the cards will be completely mixed again, which could even be an advantage for us in order to be able to able to achieve a better result from the 16th spot on the starting grid.”
