Sepang Test: Successfull completed

  • 01.02.2017

Jonas Folger was very happy with his achievements during the three-days testing in the exhausting heat of Malaysia.

The third and final day at the Sepang International Circuit close to Kuala Lumpur was also marked by the continuation of his determinedly learning process after moving to the premier class MotoGP™. This included a race simulation during Wednesday’s session, which Folger succeeded with an outstanding performance. Beyond that, he has made further progress in respect to the Yamaha YZF-M1’s setting, run by the French Monster Yamaha Tech 3 Team. Apart from the result with 15th fastest in the overall standings after a total of 137 laps at 5.5 kilometres long track, Folger valued the first test in 2017 in many respects as a complete success.

In just two weeks, Folger will return to work when the southern Australian Phillip Island Circuit hosts the second official MotoGP™ as preparation for the upcoming championship.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), P15 – 2´00.312 (25/54):

“I’m very happy with the progress and it’s the same for the outcome of this three-day test. Things during the final day went also very gratifying. However, most of all I’m really pleased about my race simulation, which really ended above our expectations. Unfortunately, we had to do it in two stages, because it started to rain after four lap. Luckily it was just a brief rain with just a few drops, so we were able to continue our schedule in the afternoon.

“It was my first proper long run with 16 laps in a row aboard the Yamaha M1. Except for two laps, when Loris Baz once stopped his lap just in front of me, I was lapping consistently in the 2´00 range. With the result of this race simulation, we are all very, very happy. In addition, my race pace was faster than that of my team mate Johann (Zarco) and it’s no secret, that the majority went out for a time attack with new tyres and less fuel for a view occasions. We, on the other hand, were focussed on performance for the duration of a race distance. Of course, I also wanted to put in a hot lap but for some reason the soft tyre didn’t work for me.

“Even if we couldn’t keep our great position after the first two days and P15 in the combined standings doesn’t show our true potential, we cannot complain. To finish the first test of the year with just 0.9 seconds off the pace, the results are highly satisfactory and I’m pretty sure, that I’m able to stay with Johann, running under equal terms – the team mate is always the first reference. More importantly, I learned a lot during these three days. Even during our long run this afternoon, I discovered so many new things that will be helpful in the future.

“In addition, we also managed to solve the braking issues. The bike’s braking stability is much better now, as well I have made improvements on my riding in this area. Next, we must work on the engine brake. This is certainly a task on our schedule for the next test in two weeks. But as said, the successful race simulation outweighs all other things. In general, it was a productive stay, which have brought many positive findings. Even though it were three demanding days and I feel a bit exhausted now, I’m look forward already to the Australian test.

“This successful performance and these positive findings underline also, that my crew, the team as a well-coordinated squad, as well as the support of my suppliers has worked very well already. The new leather suites perfect, which also applies to the boots and helmet. Therefore, a big thanks to all involved parties and of course to the entire staff in Tech 3. It’s a great pleasure to work in this environment. I feel like I’m in such good hands.”
