Sepang Test: Day Two – Short and Good
Jonas Folger was again amongst the fastest riders on day two of testing’s in Malaysia.
The second of this three-day test at the enormous Sepang International Circuit got underway with a considerable delay. The reason was a heavy downpour on Monday evening because it took time until the afternoon, before the 5.5 kilometres long track had dried out finally. It was a long wait for Teams and riders till 3:30 pm because it didn’t make sense to start their daily schedule with slick tyres earlier. Folger and his crew first started to test and evaluate new tyres brought by Michelin for this test before they were able to devote themselves to the tasks scheduled for Tuesday. Apart from that, the 23-year-old German rider again showed an impressive performance. At times, Folger was in second position at the time screen and finished the day ninth fastest overall. In comparison with the opening day, he managed to improve his lap time by 0.1 second.
This first official pre-season tests will be concluded on Wednesday with the third and final day. All action on- and off-track can be viewed again via motogp.com’s Live Stream.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZF-M1), P9 – 2´00.495 (43/43):
” It was another good day, I’m happy. But first we must wait a long time before the track’s condition allowed a reasonable work. The track just dried out very slowly after yesterday evening’s heavy thunderstorm. In addition, the heavy rain washed out the good grip from the previous days. Nevertheless, the conditions were good in the afternoon and surprisingly there were no wet patches as seen many times here. As soon we went out on track with approx. 2,5 hours track remaining, we were able to make good progress straight away. But first we had to test new tyres because Michelin has brought a new type for the front and rear for this test. With the front I had a good feeling immediately and I’m pretty sure that this tyres is an improvement. In contrast, I had my doubts with the rear tyre. But in the end, all other riders could go faster with this option, so I decided to continue with it too. After the conclusion of this kind of tests and some small adjustments to the setting were done, we continued our work, which we had to postpone yesterday afternoon as it started to rain. We tried and worked to find a solution for the problems we encountered under braking where I lost a lot of time. I tried to adapt my riding to brake later but the bike didn’t allow. We therefore went a bit harder with the front which had a positive effect. Then I still had two more softer tyres for which it was also necessary to fine-tune the rear with some clicks in the harder direction too. Also, this measure was correct and I was able to put in a strong lap time. But I wasn’t completely pleased because I was lacking some edge grip. However, at this point we run out of time to try and test any great things. Again, a little click on the shock paid off immediately so I was able to improve my lap time even with used tyres. I’m really happy, because we managed it, to solve our problems with the front and the rear. We will now try improve the agility of the bike in order to make it easier to ride. During this short track time, we have done an incredible amount of work today. I feel a bit tired but at the same time I’m enormously relieved as we were able to make steady progress with every step we did. I’m looking forward to tomorrow.“
