Valencia Test: Fastest rookie after opening day
At his debut in the premier class MotoGP, Jonas Folger impressed with an astonishing performance throughout the first day.
The 23-year-old German rider got straight to work today, opening a new chapter in his career. Under bright skies as during last weekend at the 2016 season’s finale, Folger was able to gain first sensations with his new Monster Yamaha Tech 3 team and also aboard his new race bike in form of the team’s Yamaha VZR-M1 powered by more than 250 hp. Folger rode a faultless test at the 4 kilometres tricky Valencia Circuit to complete day one after 52 laps with a personal best marker just 1.5 seconds off the pace. The ambitious rider from Bavaria was thus not only the fastest newcomer on Tuesday, but also ahead of same vastly experienced MotoGP riders.
The two-day test will continue Wednesday where Folger will continue to gather knowledge of the bike that he will contest next season with.
#94 Jonas FOLGER (Monster Yamaha Tech 3, Yamaha YZR-M1), P16 – 1´32.450 (51/52):
“I am very happy about my debut with the MotoGP Yamaha. It was an exciting moment this morning and a great experience overall. I was a bit nervous before I went out on track for the first time but I think this is normal and certainly I wasn’t the only one today. Therefore, my first exit was very special of course because it had to absorb that much information. But I was able to get used to YZR-M1 quite quickly and I learned a lot from the very first moment. In addition, the team helped me so much and they give me useful hints, what I had to change with this bike. The main goal was just to get familiarized with the bike and to adapt my riding style to MotoGP. But at the end of the day we were pleased with our progress. The thing that impressed me most was the smoothness of the engine with all that power and also the top speed, which is incredible. The bike is impressive in general and I enjoy riding it a lot with such a strong yet controllable engine. Tomorrow, I am to carry on at that point we stopped today but first, I will study all the collected data this evening and then to start comparing myself with some other riders. In addition, when I get back on track tomorrow morning, I will continue to adapt myself with the bike and then we may capable to start with some adjustments later in the day.“
