Full-time MotoGP™ test rider for KTM will again stand in for the still-injured Spaniard Pol Espargaro in the GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 team this weekend.

The original plan was for Pol Espargaro to return to racing for the Gran Premio d’Italia. Jonas Folger had therefore already said a mental goodbye to his crew of the French team after the last race three weeks ago in Le Mans, but let it be known that he was ready to step back in at any time. In the last few days, he promptly received a call that Espargaro had not yet been declared fit by his medical team.

After a three-week break, the MotoGP™ World Championship finally resumes, and in doing so, it does in style, as the series makes a stop in the beautiful countryside of Tuscany. The venue for the Gran Premio d’Italia, round sixth of the season, is the iconic Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello some 30 km north-east of Florence.

Mugello is always good for exciting races and is repeatedly named as one of the favourite tracks by many riders. The slow and fast corners with sweeping changes of direction, long straights and corners with off camber turns make the track one of the most challenging layouts on the racing calendar.

Jonas Folger knows the track in the green heart of Italy from his earlier career. Last time he last raced at Mugello back in 2017. Folger is looking forward to the race weekend in Mugello, especially after the progress he has made race by race. He finished thirteenth in Sunday’s race at Le Mans and has scored a total of seven points since taking over the role as Pol Espargaro’s replacement. The 29-year-old German main target will try to get closer to the competition again.

#94 Jonas FOLGER (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3, KTM RC16):

“The first thing I want to say is that I feel very sorry for Pol because I know he has worked very hard since his injury to come back at Mugello. But unfortunately, he did not get the green light from the doctors. I just hope for him that it is the last Grand Prix he misses. For my part, I will use the new opportunity at Mugello to further improve my riding with a modern MotoGP bike. Mugello is a very special track, with fast straights and fast corners. So, it will be challenging riding-wise, but it will also be very nice to be able to ride at this beautiful track again. This is why I am looking forward to Mugello mostly. We will try to take another step after Le Mans, getting closer to the guys and being as competitive as possible. I am looking forward to working with the Tech3 team again, and I feel more than ready for another race weekend.”
